Shifter boot wire - detailed install/replacement questions

Postby MR2WSN » Thu May 27, 2004 7:20 pm

My shifter boot has no wire, so its impossible for me to guess the dimensions that fit best to put in my shiny new shifter boot shipped in all the way from Abbottsford.

Aly kindly pointed me to a site showing how to do it:
http://www.redlinegoods.com/MR2MK1install.shtm

I also looked up the drawings online but they give nothing about the wire: http://www.mr2ownersclub.com/online_parts_catalog/Interior/console%20box.GIF

So what I need to know is:
a) what are the outside dimensions of the rectangle the wire forms (standard in Mk1 standards)
b) the wire likely isnt joined, so is the break in the loop at the front, side or back (relative to the car) of the boot

For installs, is it just a matter of nudging the wire/boot over the 4 clips?

Thanks, Don

Don

length 165mm/6.5"
width 105mm/4.25"

there seems to be a crimp fastener of some sort on one of the
short sides, hard to tell original cover is still on

i've got the original boot from my spare console sittiing on the desk and it the boot seems to be a symetrical pyramid, does not seem to be a defined front or back side

if you are going to make the run Sunday I could bring it along for a looksee

yes. it just snaps into place, but you need to be careful as the clips are quite thin and snap off quite easily.

Thanks for the measurements.

The crimp fastener suggests a solid wire loop. That makes sense.

Any impression on how heavy the wire is? Coat hanger type? There is a light-weight coat hanger wire I'd think about too.

Thanks, Don

if i remember from back in november, the gauge of wire is about the same as coat hanger, but much more springy. coat hanger wire is too soft and pliable

The install was VERY easy for me.. as I just removed the shifter knob and monueverd the boot out of the opening without removing the entire panel. Than just install the new boot .. it should just clip right in.

Hmm - if coat hanger wire is too pliable, then does anyone have a spare OEM shifter boot wire?

Thanks, Don
