Dash cams

Postby immorality » Tue Oct 29, 2013 7:30 pm

In light of recent events it's starting to feel like this is a necessary item for daily driving in the lower mainland. Someone please school me on what they have use/have used, what they like and don't like. Blackvue, Finevu, Lukas, etc. I don't want to be taking this thing in and out of the car all the time, so I'd want something super low profile/stealthy. I've seen a lot of big ones out there with large GPS style suction cups, and that just doesn't work for me.

The one you already mentioned, Blackvue, Finevu, etc, are the most popular ones. My friends use Blackvue and is very stealthy and can be tucked behind the rear view mirror.

Jado is another one I've seen which is a camera built into a rear view mirror. Some are permanent installs and is active once ignition is on and has removal memory cards or USB ports for downloading onto PC.

Whatever you choose make sure it is has good HD night vision.

I'm using one called Coral which I bought from Taiwan. It has LED lights for night vision and is in 1080p HD. Slightly bulkier then Blackvue but serves my purpose. I had someone side swipe me as well and blamed it on me. Once I showed my video to ICBC, there was no arguement.

Get a FineVu CR500 over a Blackvue. I've heard stories about Blackvues having iffy firmware and overheats during the summer. The lens also gets dirty fairly easily, just ask Dalton LOL.

Revscene sponsor, The Speed Syndicate carries both. I myself have a cheapo $30 eBay special but it's done its job but it's a bit bulky. I don't notice it when I'm driving though since it's behind my rear view mirror.

Here's a sample of my dash cam, which isn't bad for $30 IMO

Here's another thread on RS that has a bunch of discussions about different ones and what not

Yeah, if I were you Russ, I'd grab a FineVue. My Blackvue, DRG 400 Version 2, which was the flagship camera at the time (about a year or so ago) is acting up now. Sometimes certain video segments are corrupted, and the lens on mine is hazing pretty bad.

This is when I just got it, about a year ago.

And this is recent. Ignore how both pictures are at Langara LOL.

As soon as my Blackvue goes out, I'm looking at a FineVue or Vicovation, and maybe something smaller for the rear of the car. These things are definitely a worthwhile investment.

Thanks Dalton. I've been reading that on Revscene as well. I'm considering something like the Lukas 7900 because of the size, but the Finevu CR-500 looks to be a pretty nice size as well. I'm also considering getting a cheapo $50 one for the rear of the car, but that might be a little more difficult to keep stealth.

Just saw this, it's from ASR, where I got my dashcam from. It's a Blackvue, but maybe they fixed the common overheating issue and updated the firmware. Combo package, looks like it comes with a smaller camera for the rear.

Pic is too big, click the link.

The Lukas model looks pretty good, though I don't think I would have use for GPS - and at $250 it's a great deal for such a feature rich product. The Blackvue appears more stealthy though and a rear camera is a nice touch.

I know a few people who bought it from there/got it installed. None of them didn't really have anything bad to say.

Before you buy a jammer, do some research! Lots of scams out there reminding me of white van speaker sales.

I think you're better off walking on the legal side of the law with a radar detector.

Oh... Lots of those scams out there too :)
