Midnight Photoshoot

Postby vindicator » Fri Jul 13, 2012 1:08 am

So me and driftingzzw30 spent 8 hours detailing the MR2s... My car's paint need extensive work.
We washed all the dirt and grime off the car that was from a very spirited drive in the boonies the other night with bbarnumboy. Then we clay barred the paint to get all the contaminants out of the paint to get it smooth as glass. After another wash and masking all the trim (what a pain in the ass that was! Thanks driftingzzw30) we cut the oxidized pink paint with a compound and orbital buffer, then polished it thereafter.
Finally comes the wax. Quick story: The day before I watched a video on youtube that got me inspired about the paint on my MR2. I showed it to driftingzzw30 and he thought that we should have a detailing shop just work on my car. But apparently they charge over $1,000 for what I wanted... here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEr6_q5JLZI
So back to the wax job on my car. I come to see that my brand new can on wax has been clawed at by 4 fingers... I figured that there was a first time for everything and decided to give that method a try and we both hand massaged 1/3 of the can of wax on my car.
His Spyder only needed a light polish and wax for the first time after taking ownership of it. Another 1/3 of the can went on his car somehow despite his car not having a roof.....
A mandatory photoshoot was necessary, so here were the results. Enjoy!

Both look great. It does take a lot of work to get the finished shine.

Very good, glad someone is taking the time for their paint. I recently bought some Maguiar's wax off eBay for cheap and plan to really shine up the deuce. I've been trying to get a detailing party get-together for years but it always falls through - I finally gave up.

I'd be in for a detailing party :D

Both cars look great too, the red looks so nice when it's all shiny.

Hey you got to admit the hand waxing process did yield better results then our usual machine method. Would I do this again oh never again. I'm glad all I have to do now is just upkeep and wax my car from time to time. This point onward I'm glad that I don't own a red car. You should see all or our rags turning pink. It was like Vindicator's car was having it's monthly cycle or something. When his car gets resprayed I hope they put a good few coats of clear on top.

Some kind of Meguirs wax I think. It was in a black tin that's all I remember. I prefer to use solid wax vs the liquid stuff.

I was just at the local parts store and they had a pretty limited selection. I picked what I thought was the best, keeping and eye out for anything that says carnauba. I picked out Meguiar's gold class for $23.99. What I'm probably gonna do before the Beach event in September is wax it again with carnauba for the color depth and shine, and put on a layer of synthetic wax to protect it.

Yeah, I use Meguiar's too, Hi-Tech Yellow carnauba wax - no complaints (except for the $20 price tag per 16oz bottle). I think the Gold stuff is even pricier.

But last year I switched to Meguiar's Marine-RV wax, pretty much the same thing but only $3 in bulk (eBay).

Driftingzzw30 always recommended Pinnacle Souveran wax, and I'd like to give that a try once I repolish the paint later on.
