entrax's MK2 Winter Project (A/C)

Postby entrax » Mon Jul 21, 2014 5:06 pm

So summer has just started, meaning it's time to plan out my winter projects.

Last year, the heat was bearable as I parked in a shaded area at work. Changing jobs means different parking and this time around, it is directly under the sun.

I have leather seats, so it is quite uncomfortable driving home.

Being that this is my summer cruiser, it would be nice to have a car that has A/C. For this car, my main goal is to also have everything on this car that was available in 1990 in Canada. This car being turbo/leather/abs/ttops, the A/C option is the next one.

So, while it is summer, it is time to collect parts.

I've looked through the diagrams/wiring and it looks reasonable.

However, one big question has been:
Where does the A/C line go for MK2 MR2's, over or under the gas tank?

Any advice would be great!

The two lines go under the gas tank. You can take a look at my car if you want to get some idea of where things go (as much as you can see). If you are lucky you can get in touch with Josh in Marysville then next time he parts out an AC equipped car (he might have one now) and spend a day there getting everything out.

Looks simple, right?

Thanks Russ,

Contact info/username for Josh?

I'm crossing fingers that most of the A/C wiring is prebuilt into the cars. Similar to how power window and non power window cars have the same wiring for the harness before the door. only difference is the actual door harness.

otherwise, it is time for crimp and cut again...

You're probably better off just swapping out the harnesses since you will have to remove the dash anyways. Josh goes by deathcougar on the boards.

Keep in mind that American cars came factory equipped with A/C, if that option was ordered.
The Canadian cars all have port-installed A/C from an accessory kit.
The two function slightly differently, some might say the Canadian is a better system. It likely comes with plug'n'play harnesses as well, instead of having to deal with replacing or modifying an existing one.

I have a Toyota AC Instal manual somewhere. If I find it I should photocopy it

In Canada AC was a dealer installed option
Most of the wiring is there, just plug and play.
Talk to edmond chu. As I hooked him up with a oem AC kit for his '93
Bolt on as I remember

My mistake, thought the kit was port installed, not dealer. In any case, the kits are a bit different.

Kind of funny that my car never had AC installed. A bit of a surprise. I'd love to find one of the kits.

Yes ... getting that complete factory kit was awesome! Everything bolts straight in. Make sure you grab the A/C amplifier too as that just plugs in as well. It was a whole new driving experience thereafter.

... and make a note of kungfucops tip above. He did a complete A/C install as well and we both ran into the same problem at the end.

Yup, 2-yota had the full kit new in box. Mine was pieced together from a donor car at the wreckers. The harness in Canadian MKIIs are already equipped for A/C but the connectors are taped up and tucked away. As far as I know, the full dash does not need to be removed for this install, only the radio trim and probably the glove box for the interior part.

That would be a huge benefit, because the dash is quite the pain to remove!

What about the lines in the frunk? Do they exist on a Canadian car, or did dealers dive into them all. I guess bumpers were pulled as well.
I'm pulling the final parts off of the old project shell before getting rid of it but decided that it's just not quite worth installing AC on my car from a parted car for how little I drive it. If I could find a BNIB accessory kit, I may consider it.

All the lines and components in the front compartment required to be installed. Bumper can stay on as most of the parts can be accessed after the liners are pulled off.
