Hey Matt,

Have you seen the JDM equivalent Part #90915-10004 and do you know what the differences are?

As well as the Denso and Nippon are the same company correct?

A lot of people assume that the Toyota would be more expensive. I never used to check toyota or honda for parts as I just assumed they'd be more expensive. Now I check their first, but I'm sure I have at one point paid more for a jobber part back in the day that I could have gotten a new OEM honda/toyota one for.

Nippon Denso was one company but it's just Denso now.

TRD Japan filters 9091510004 and 9091510001 are no longer available through Toyota Canada...and USA as well I believe. Mainly because they didn't sell any....I mean who is gonno pay $30 for an oil filter? But you can get the TRD USA filters which don't even come close to what the TRD Japan filters look like. They are all white and look like Fram filters but cheaper looking and it's only $10.00. I will do a TRD USA filter test later on but first I have a few other common fitlers to test. I do have a TRD Japan filter but that one will sit on my shelf for a long time LOL...

You get what you pay for in life. A cheap oil filter is like cheap bypass heart surgery, do you really want to chance it? I've learned to buy OEM if possible, it's just smart and cheaper in the long run.

Purolator PureONE VS TOYOTA Denso (Oil Filters)

PRICE: (excluding tax)
Purolator PureONE: $15.98 + .50 cent echo fee (Wakefield Sperling)
Toyota OEM filter: $6.99 echo fee included (From any Toyota dealership)

Exterior: (before cutting)

Dimensions:
Width is the same. Toyota filter is 1/2 of an inch taller, sitting at 3.5 inches tall. Purolator is only 3 inches tall.

Pre-Lubed seal:
Purolator: NO
Toyota: Yes

Sealed bottom:
Purolator: NO
Toyota: Yes

Interior: (after cutting)

Anti Drain back Valve:
Purolator: Yes
Toyota: Yes

Filter material: (It is only visual, I am not a filter expert)

Purolator: Feels and looks like the Toyota filter. It has that fabric feel to it and not paper. Metal plates hold together the filter. I must say this filter looks well made. Anti drain back valve is at the top of the filter like the Toyota filter but is part of the top plate and does not separate.

Toyota: Again Feels like Fabric rather than paper. Toyota filter is held together by clear plastics that look to be hot pressed into the filter base at each end. Anti drain back valve is also at the top of the filter.

Filter Height:
Purolator: 2.0 inches or 5.3cm
Toyota: 3.0 inches or 7.5 cm

Number of folds of the filter:
Purolator: 52 folds
Toyota: 44 folds

Valve structure:
Purolator: All metal
Toyota: Metal and plastic

I would have to say that both of these filter are well made. Toyota filter element is longer by ONE inch but Purolator has 52 close together folds as suppose to 44 of Toyota. So i think they must have the same filtering power. Both filter element feel the same. Bottom line, both filter look well made. But I would rather pay the $6.99 for the Toyota one than $16.50 for the Purolator PureONE!

NAPA GOLD Series (premuim) VS TOYOTA Denso (Oil Filters)

Napa Gold: This one looks and feels like the Fram filter. The filter element is paper-ish and is glued to metal plates at each end. There is excess glue on the filter element. Unlike other filters, Napa Gold's anti drain valves is at the bottom of the filter.

Napa Gold is an OK filter but still not as good as Toyota filter. Toyota filter element is longer and better quality. Napa gold is more expensive that Toyota filter. I would again have to go with the Toyota filter on this one.

Here is a picture of all four filter element that I have opened up so far. FRAM filter is looking very sad with it's cardboard constructed filter.

This is just my opinion....Toyota filter is hands down the best filter so far!

That is very nice of you to offer. I must say this experiment is very interesting to me and I am sure to all of you. Of course I never expected to get any financial help. I will continue to test other filters and if you like to help me with the cost of this that would be great. Although I am paying for these filters out of my own pocket, this experiment is owned by this club. So you are welcome to help out financially. Thank you.

Thx, this is pretty damn neat. I'm curious about a Fram "Tough Gaurd" and the K&N filters.

Stop by your local Lordco and get them to call me (Dave at 44) If I'm working I'll tell them to hook you up with the best deal I can on these filters if you're buying them. All in support of this experiment.

Or PM me location info and names and junk, I'll get them shipped somewhere with pricing attached.

Thanks for the offer David. I'll see what I can do. :D

All these oil filters are for a MKI. But it doesn't matter because according to Toyota, all three generation MR2s and all 6 engines (4AGE, 4AGZE, 5SFE, 3SGTE, 3SGE, 1ZZFE) use the same filter. Part number 90915-YZZF1.
If other oil filter manufacturers have different part numbers for these engines, then...that's because they don't know any better?

I will do a test on all requested oil fitlers.
