Wow Matt, you really have some extra time on your hands lol. Thanks for the writeup, I too have been using Fram for a while now (sad to say I even have one on the 2 right now :oops: ). Time to swap for the OEM come spring time.

Well guys, I know I haven't posted here in a few weeks but I am back with another filter experiment and this one is hot. This week we are comparing the Toyota filter to the all famous K&N filter. Hope you enjoy :D

`````````````````````````````````````````````
K&N VS TOYOTA Denso (Oil Filters)
PRICE: (excluding tax)
K&N: $9.98 + .50 cent echo fee (Mopac)
Toyota OEM filter: $6.99 echo fee included (From any Toyota dealership)
Exterior: (before cutting)
Dimensions:
Width is the same. Toyota filter is 1/2 of an inch taller, sitting at 3.5 inches tall. K&N is only 3 inches tall.
Pre-Lubed seal:
K&N: NO
Toyota: Yes
Sealed bottom:
K&N: NO
Toyota: Yes
Interior: (after cutting)
Anti Drain back Valve:
K&N : Yes
Toyota: Yes
Filter material: (It is only visual, I am not a filter expert)
K&N: To my shock K&N filter element has the same paper feel to it, like the other cheap looking brands. Metal plates are glued to the filter element at each end. As you can see in the picture the filter is not glued together properly. Anti drain back valve is at the top of the filter and is the same design, if not the exact one, as the FRAM filter!!!!!! Who make K&N filters again?
Toyota: Again Feels like Fabric rather than paper. Toyota filter is held together by clear plastic pieces that are pressed into the filter base at each end. Anti drain back valve is also at the top of the filter.
Filter Height:
K&N: 2.0 inches or 5.3cm
Toyota: 3.0 inches or 7.5 cm
Number of folds of the filter element:
K&N: 39 folds (Lowest number and the same as FRAM filter…)
Toyota: 44 folds
Valve structure:
K&N: Metal and plastic
Toyota: Metal and plastic
I would have to say that the K&N filter is not impressing at all. I thought that it would be another great filter like the Purolator PureONE, but it is far from it. The way it’s put together is so cheap. If I were to grade it, I would put it at the bottom after the Fram filter. Don’t waste your money on this filter. I would buy a Toyota filter anyday…..
Stock Toyota or Pure One...
Hmm.. What about the Tough guard Filters by Fram?
I should just cut one open at work.... I'm really curious.
Surprising about the K&N one though.
I was showing this to my "ass-man" today at work, and he suggested we just donate you some more filters "for science".
Just let me know what Lordco is closest to you and I'll ship you a little box. I've got "Fram Tough Gaurd" and "Beck Arnley Parts" filters here. Anything else?
Are these filters all for the same application, if so which car?
Hey David, that would be great if you can donate some filters. I live in Abbotsford and I am not really sure what is our LORDCO store number. All the filters are for MK1 application but it doesn't really matter as both MKI and MKII use the same filter, according to Toyota anyway. It appears that some after-market filter companies have different size filters for MKII NA and Turbo!!! So let just go with 1989 Toyota MR2. If you can, send me as many different brand of filter as you can get. The more we test out the better it is :D Thanks buddy.
Ps. I work at Sunrise Toyota here in Abbotsford's Automall. They can reach me at 604-857-2658.
