My mission to put a '93 Turbo back on the road

Postby 68style » Mon Aug 18, 2008 9:27 am

Hey guys, most of you already know my sordid story, decided to collect it all in 1 thread..... thought I might as well throw "project" up... in May 2007 I imported a 1993 which ended up being my wife's car.

This is what it looked like after I got it (photos curteousy of Rev):

Image

Unfortunately, not long after that picture was taken (about a month later) I was driving it and somebody in a 2004 Civic decided to drive on the wrong side of the road trying to cheat to a left-turn lane and hit me head-on, so the car got totalled.

Here is the car looking all sad today:

So almost a year has passed since the accident (!! I've been busy moving and adjusting to married life, etc.) and I decide to do something about the car. I contemplated parting it out, but I have some sort of psychological disorder that prevents me from "killing" things that are non-sentient like cars, so I wanted to try and "save" the car.

Conveniently enough, I ended up finding a complete 1993 shell in Texas that was complete save for the motor and transmission. Perfect! I bought it and imported it. It has some bodywork issues (it was a lot worse than these pictures make it look) and the paint is super-crappy Maaco $400 quality + I cannot stand yellow (just a personal thing, don't take offense!), but I am changing that and will be swapping the drivetrain and any other useful bits over from the crashed car so hopefully it's "organs" can live on in another vehicle.

Here are some pics of the shell in its current state of ugly:

I am halfway through taking the engine out of the crashed car... and in the meantime, I stripped the yellow shell vehicle down, took some panels that are useful off the crashed car and put them on the yellow shell... and it's off at the paint shop! It is getting painted Toyota code 187 (murder!!!!) which is Steel Mist Grey. Same colour as my '94.

Here are some pics:

I've got nearly a hundred pictures just of bodywork so far, kind hard to pick what to post... here's a few more from Friday last week (2008-08-15)

Bodywork on rear fender, there were some door dings and ripples in the panel:

Here's an interesting comparison... the shell car's front lip was torn off (it had an Aeroware bodykit) when it hit a curb and the front bumper wasn't really in very good shape.

Here is a before shot of the bumper after it was taken off the car:

Here's an after shot of the bumper primed and ready to paint. Looks brand new again!

... PLEASE tell me the painter would still like to paint another '2! I want to get his contact info badly!

It's looking really really good. Definately keep us updated. And as Matt K. said, it's so cool to see the entire progress of a car's makeover.

I don't really know to be honest, I can ask him if you like... here's a picture of it somewhere between the yellow and primer stage if that helps:

Hey Eric, this guy is Wing, the same guy who painted 2-Yota's black, kungfucop's yellow and Dan's spotless white cars as well as Ryan's (doesn't post here much) red one. Took me awhile to track him down since he's not in Richmond anymore.

Wing only paints cars properly ie. taking the doors off and all the mouldings off etc. His workmanship shows though. I paid alot for my car to be painted by him and my MR2 didn't need any real bodywork.

IMO there are only good and bad paint jobs... either pay $4000 to have it done right or $400 to have it done by Maaco.
