MR2WSN Fall'16 MR2 Project

Postby MR2WSN » Sat Oct 29, 2016 4:22 pm

The past few years have been busy in non-MR2 things, and my MR2's (yes 2 of them) haven't gotten a lot of attention. And, for that reason, some of you may not recall me or my car(s) from various meets.

#1 car is a fully restored AW15, so not much needed then except drive it, and normal operating maintenance (tires, batteries, brakes, oil, etc.)

#2 is my "project" car which is nearly an identical AW15 now, differing only in T-tops vs Sunroof, and some coloring in cabin. This winter is time to finish the job....

Things for this fall to bring it to a new life:

a) new tires - DONE
b) new battery - DONE
c) brake job - DONE
d) rust cut out and replaced with new metal, then primed - DONE
e) air effects updated - DONE
f) full body paint job - SCHEDULED DAYS FROM NOW
g) mount decals from my parts stash (yes, I really do have Toyota original decals for this car) - PLANNED, NOT URGENT
h) stereo swap-back - NOT PLANNED YET
i) get a replacement fuse-box cover for the engine compartment - SEARCH IN PROCESS, NON-CRITICAL

The result will be two near-identical MR2's with the only perceptible difference being the T-top/Sunroof, and an after-market stereo (for which I have a replacement for "collector" picture purposes).

My intent this winter is to submit the paperwork to ICBC to have them BOTH "collector" plated at a ridiculously low rate by spring 2017.

And then next year my hope is to drive TWO 2's side-by-side in the Tsawwassen Sun Festival. :D Should be fun!

A few more steps, a bunch more money, and it may actually happen. 8) 8) 8)

Wow, good job , very ambitious !
Good luck on the collector plates, mine went well, just took 2-3 months.

The car is now in the paint-shop. In one week, I get it back and we'll see the outcome.

The paint guy seemed impressed with the body work, and felt there was little for him to do in that respect (couple super-minor items).

The 2nd MR2 is now out of both body and paint shops and is looking mighty fine. Pictures are on BCMR2 on FB.

Status of the restoration is:

a) new tires - DONE
b) new battery - DONE
c) brake job - DONE
d) rust cut out and replaced with new metal, then primed - DONE
e) air effects updated - DONE
f) full body paint job - DONE (minor repaint on mirrors which were missed)
g) mount decals from my parts stash (yes, I really do have Toyota original decals for this car) - SKIPPING - looks great with side trim/decals
h) stereo swap-back - PLANNED for Tuesday
i) get a replacement fuse-box cover for the engine compartment - SEARCH IN PROCESS, NON-CRITICAL
j) wiper arms and signal lenses - DONE

Minor issues with clutch at this point, but these are normal maintenance items that do not preclude submitting the vehicle to ICBC for collector plates. The only thing that would impact an collector plate is the non-era specific stereo.

Hoping to be taking final pictures with era-specific stereo by next weekend, then get the paperwork in.
