Also, since this thread is slightly trailing off to saving $$ on gas...

If possible, download an app called Gas Buddy. It gives you the rates of all gas stations around you, or whichever location you search. Then you plan your trip accordingly to the cheapest station. :P

I second that. I use the app as well. It's frequently updated and really shows you how much of a variance it is around even abbotsford.

I asked a border guard once about Jerry cans. And he said they are supposed to charge for them. But he personally lets them go if people declare them.

i've chatted a bit with the locals and they (US) have regulations preventing them from buying large jerry cans. They are very strict about it and their equivalent of one is like 5L and less because they have arson issues

I always thought we were allowed to come back with ten litres of gas in two 5 litre jerry cans, I might just ask the border guard when I go tonight.

Standard Jerrycan, (originally designed for the Wehrmacht in the 1930's) is 20 liters or 5.3 U.S. Gallons.

Not sure if this is true

Canada Customs’ regulations allow Canadians to return with a full tank, but any more gasoline is supposed to be declared and is subject to a 5.1-per-cent duty.

But if you're over the 24 or 48 hour time stayed then is it considered as part of your spending limit or is gasoline in its own category?
