91 MK2 MR2 Bushings

Postby Ruus » Sat Sep 29, 2012 2:14 pm

Hi guys

My MR2 started making some clunky noises around the suspension and after taking to my mechanic pointed out all my bushings are pretty much done... Do you guys have any recommendations on 2's R US bushings or any other reliable place to get them? I also see Camshaft is selling TRD bushings but dont think i need the performance of TRD bushings for driving my car 3000km/year.

Any experience with these bushings or suggestions on others and or where to get them?

Secondly it mentions that there are different sizes for front/rear sway bar bushings amongst the 1991 models. Does anyone know the mm' size for our 91 mr2 turbos (CDN)?

Ruus

I have prothanes in both 2's and am quite happy with them. a little firmer than OEM and with the mileage you drive will last quite a while.
as for rhe bar sizes, as i understand it the only way to be sure is to actually measure what's on your car and order accordingly.
twoRus hand packs the sets to order so they will put whatever size you ask for into the kit.

I hear prothanes are a lot harder and will wear out quicker than the softer oem ones.

My experience is Prothane bushings definitely channel more vibration into the cockpit, which is one of the reasons I didn't pop for them. It's noticeable when you hop into a non-Prothane equipped deuce afterward. For me, it makes the car just a little less refined which overshadows any slim performance benefits. Also, if they're not lubed properly, they tend to squeak a bit over time.

I have found they give more feel for the road without sacrificing ride quality. Lubricated properly they shouldn't squeak. Mine have been in for two years, no squeaks.

It's only the sway bar to measure, just get under there with a caliper and put it on the bars. A measuring tape might work if you have a keen eye.

As Yeungun and repete posted

Prothane or energy suspension has positives and negatives

Positives are
Cheap
Cool colors
Stiffer ride that equals to responsiveness
Lifetime warranty (or was)
Easy install

Negatives are
Stiffness transfers noise and vibration its a given.
Noisy squeaking because of stiffness
Lubing causes dirt attraction and abrasion
They do not last long as elasticity is not like a oem or TRD bushing.
So in a short time the bushing pounds out. I was shocked to be able to see visible wear in less then 30-40k

So weigh the options and make your choice. If you don't mind having to take your car apart every other year. And replacing them its a good deal

Make your own

I will have to find the YouTube video of a guy making bushings for his Audi.
As you can order almost any level of stiffness

As far as I know, there are no off the shelf rubber bushings available anywhere.

Looking for street bushings, not urethane, prothane are too stiff and don't have the compliance and bind during movement.

The urethane comes in a number of different hardnesses. Being that this is the only option you can choose softer then propthane or energy.
Since you have no other options
