Altering an odometer legally

I know the mk1 isnt too hard to do. When I got a metric gague, (I have a US car) I changed mine to equal the metric equivilant. I just put a sticker on the gague cluster indicating the date and the before and after mileage. (even though it is the same only in different units.) Getting the digits to line up was a pain but i got mine pretty close.
