How to remove steering wheel?

Postby tenthousandfeet » Wed Jan 15, 2014 8:47 pm

Hi guys. I was attempting to remove the steering wheel from my 91 Turbo and now I'm at a bit of a loss as to how the wheel pad comes off. In all my previous cars they have just popped right off when pulled. That's apparently not the case in my MR2! Exasperated, I checked the service manual... The instructions for a Canadian model MR2 are laughable:

"1)Remove a screw"

(that is all it says. seriously.)

How does the wheel pad and horn button get removed from the wheel on a Canadian, airbag-less, 1991 steering wheel?

What wheel do you have on the car now? Got a pic?

Usually it's just a couple of screws on the back and then just jiggle the pad until it comes free.

Screws on the back, you say? I'll have a look for those next time I'm in the garage. Are they accessible from any wheel rotation, or does it have to be moved to a specific spot?

To remove the airbag/horn pad, there is 2 screws on the side of the pad. If you look on the right side, above the cruise control attachment, there is a torx screw. Same location on the opposite side for the left torx screw.
IIRC, it is a T30 or T35.

I guess we should have asked if it's a air bag wheel or not

No airbag. Wasn't that the case with all the Canadian 91s?
