air condition

Postby Mikey » Wed Apr 22, 2009 8:31 pm

when i bought my car, it came with a/c but it never worked

so.. i'm just trying to get it working before the summer heat comes along

i went to a shop to see how much it would cost and.. depending on if i have a newer a/c system or not.. it would cost from $150 to $400

i was wondering if there was a cheaper/better solution available

i have a 1991 mk2 n/a

How does one find out if the system is the old AC or the new AC types?

I thought they still used the illegal stuff in ALL mk1 mkII's which if needing replacment, would be a bigger cost. .. Why not make sure your windows work and pull the ac out. More room, less weight. Vancouver doesn't get rediculously hot, but I understand some people enjoy the comfort.

There's stickers under the hood indicating if it's (the old) R12 refrigerant or the newer (R134a). For those that still have R12 systems you can buy R12a that is almost the same. When I was on the island I found a guy to refill my R12 system with R12a for $80. I've seen kits available at Canadian Tire, etc., but I've never tried to do it myself.

Mikey, as for the cost it depends on why your system isn't working. Are these quotes for refrigerant recharges, or are you in need of some component replacements?

I beleive 1995 was the year when manufactures by law switched from R12 to R134a. So all MR2s have the older R12.

I might have to do the same thing. Thanks for the heads up.

Has anyone seen a home recharge kit for R134a?

As far as I know you shouldn't mix refridgerants especially if you have r12 because it uses mineral oil and r134a uses different oil....
but r12 and r12a work very well together from what I have gathered on the net...

^Correct, this has been talked about before and it got pretty heated. You can not mix the two gases together. Even if you think you system is competely empty, IT IS NOT!!!! You can only refill a R12 system with a R12a ( which still a debatable subject but let's not get into that...)
To properly recharge your system, you need to evacuate your system and fill with R12a
OR
evacuate system, change receiver/dryer and then fill with R134a. ( this is the proper way of doing it but also most costly!)

To save your compressor's life, do it yourself charge systems are not recommanded. Any time you mix two gases, you can kiss your compressor good bye. compressor seals along with all other orings hate that....

Also anytime the A/C system is cracked open, Receiver/Dryer must be replaced.

the recharge cost is around $150

they also mentioned that it would be around $300-400 if my a/c system is the older system

i'm not sure what i need.. all i know is it's not working, lol

This is any old thread but I thought I'd mention that I had my AC recharged by Tod who came to BC2009. Did a good job and now my AC blows nice and cold.

I forgot about this thread too, but Tod did mine and I was so grateful and impressed that I asked him to come out to BC2009. The mobile part is great, he came out to my work and fixed my car in the parking lot. :D
