Reputable Body Shop

Postby Goopi » Wed Jul 25, 2012 9:33 am

Does anybody know of a body shop that I can trust to fix some frame damage on my car?
I know there are a lot of body shops who are willing to do the job, but I know some will cut corners.

It would be a bonus if it is nearby Surrey.

I know FixAuto is a good one in Chilliwack, we send all our cars from the shop there. But that is a long way to go.

any shop is capable of doing good and bad in my experience its a crapshoot.
cheap labor to strip down, bodyman, prep guy and then a painter. So having 4-5 guys working a car could have potential for mistakes or missed steps.
Bottom line is productivity. I have asked a shop one time to charge me more than retail to do better work and it still came out substandard.

I hope wherever you decide to go it turns out okay.

Hmm, that's what I thought. I was crossing my fingers and hoping someone works at one from this forum or at least knows someone care about mr2s more than the average Joe. :P

Cameron, with that question mark I don't know if you think their entirely good or not, but no I haven't tried them.
I have to drive with a spare tire and that seems too far if Google Maps is pointing me to the right location (Vancouver?), so spare me from a long trip
..couldn't resist leaving that joke out..
If I really don't feel comfortable with anything here, I'll definitely give them a call, thanks!

I'll just go around to whichever shop is nearby for now then and see what they can do.

I forgot what the shop is called, but it is East Vancouver, supposedly very good (but there's a reason). Dan (Bravo5) knows what the company name is, maybe you can PM him. I think Eric took his white turbo there to get painted a couple of years back and Dan himself recently did some body & paint work there on his black N/A. I'm pretty sure the guy doing the actual painting (and here's the reason) owns an SMG turbo, he may have been an old school member of this club in the late 90s - so he cares in the 'MR2 way'.

Very good shop, I know of 2 people who had their 2's painted there that looked really good. They do a lot of work on Lexus etc, I just wasn't sure if it was too far away from you.....

Right now, I'm sitting with an estimate of roughly $1000 for 15 hours of labor for body damage from Sunnyside Auto which seems good to me. Though, I have a feeling they'll add a bit more onto it as they work on the car.
They estimated an additional $400 for paint, some paint flaked off, I might be able to get my brother to help me with it if they add too much on frame repairs.

Hans (MRII) recommended me this shop, and said he is more than satisfied with their work in paint, I am mainly going their for frame work and hope they do well with this too.

Pete, I'll stick with SunnySide Auto for now since I am kind of in the middle of taking my mr2 there, I'll keep that in mind if I ever need any paint or body work done in the future. Other than that, hell yeah having another mr2 enthusiast work on an mr2 is always the safest route to go. If there is another shop, I'm sure most shops will charge more than $1000 for 15 hours of labour, I'm hoping that these guys will do good work.

Cameron, I've asked others and they also mentioned that Vietta is a bodyshop to trust, but just seeing a "Lexus Specialist" sign on their homepage scares me. I will however once again keep that in mind for my future finale paint job.

$1200 to straighten frame and paint fender.

I'll post pictures of before and after, and let you guys know how well their quality is, I'm dropping it off in 2 weeks (waiting time).

that is not too bad of a price. I need to have my floor straightened, some one who previously owned the car put some stands into the floor, both sides up front so it is a bit of a mess shall we say.

I found the price pretty good myself too. I just picked my car up yesterday, I haven't completely checked out the car.

It looks like they did a good job, but it's all covered with undercoat so it is hard to really tell. I'll give out more details in a few days when I get time.

Time for review on frame repair and paint.

The frame was pinched together under the wheel well, they pulled it back and finished it off. It's all covered with undercoating so that is about as much as I can describe.

The paint job isn't the best, a lot of orange peel that you can spot from a far distance. I really don't mind though, the paint job was covered within $300 so I wasn't expecting anything that great anyways.
You guys going to the meet tomorrow can take a look for it yourselves.

They did forget to put on a few parts, and put none of the plastic screws (8 top and 4 bottom) that hold on the bumper, and didn't plug my tail light harness in. The things above were probably due to them being in a rush. I was supposed to pick it up at 10am and showed up seeing me car incomplete in their parking lot. They quickly finished it off while I was waiting (I told them to take their time several times! :P ).
...so that explains that.

Overall I am satisfied, this is what I was willing to spend on repairs. All I wanted was my car to be able to run perfectly fine again and now that's how it is....Summer's over.... :(

sucks that the summer is over, but nice crisp fall drives can be just as fun, if not more.. driving so quick to blow the leaves off the trees.. fun ;) and the cool air means a couple more HP, and thats never a bad thing eather. thats why I really enjoy fall night drives, the cool dense air makes the car scream!
