Exhaust bolts...what do I need to know?

Postby jrider » Thu Feb 12, 2015 1:11 am

Hey guys. I've just purchased all the pieces to the Walker exhaust system for my 1986 MR2. I've got all the gaskets and such but no bolts. I've contacted Walker and they had nothing for me as far as bolts go. Does anyone know if I should look for a certain type of bolt/nut to attach the muffler/cat/front pipe? Is there special type of hardware specifically for exhaust maybe with a specific strength or hardness? Should I be using the double ended studs with nuts on either side to connect the pieces or simple bolts with nuts? honesly I've never done anything with exhaust myself before. PLEASE HAAALP! :?

If you want to get really fancy you can get some long bolts with springs on the back to pretension them (against loosening):

I would just go down to Home depot and buy some stainless steel (so they don't rust) bolts, nuts and lockwashers.

What type of connection is it again?
Just straight flange with gasket?

The bolts russ posted are for a honda with a pivoting joint and ball gasket.
On mki it had a flex section to do this

If it's just a straight flange you can use pretty much anything. Bolt strength isn't really factor because it's just exhaust pipe

Awesome! I probably should have added this before: http://mastercatalog.walkerexhaust.com/ ... ?img=11809

I guess I'll have to just measure the holes and see what I can find in that sizing. I'm intrigued by the spring ones and will look into them. But I'm definitely glad to hear that I don't really need anything special.

The spring ones are made for a flexing joint. Not needed or intended for a not flexing joint.
You can just grab some 3/8 bolts from princess auto, local auto parts store
