The MR2 has two OEM cats, one built into the downpipe and one built into the exhaust behind the muffler. If you have an aftermarket downpipe and exhaust, then you will have to cut them up to add an aftermarket cat.

As russ said..

Downpipe takes the place of the primary cat
aftermarket B pipe or muffler normally reroute the exhaust and remove the secondary cat.

If you are having aircare related problems and your car has aftermarket downpipe or exhaust. I have made a number of temporary exhaust systems with converters in them. Where you would unbolt your rear section of exhaust (normally mufflers) then bolt the temp exhaust in place. Drive to aircare get the pass then reinstall your aftermarket system.

Isn't the secondary cat only on the Cali' models?

JDM's didn't have a secondary in most applications, but then again most didn't have heated o2 sensors

So far that is the easiest solution that I know of with that type of exhaust

my car has a cat in it, but I doubt anythings happening in it. new 02 (jdm ecu so I have a 1 wire) and it droped for 230hydrocarbons to 207. im only doing the idle test because I have studded tires.

Depending on what your CO reading is, 207 isn't the best reading for a o2 sensor equipped car with fuel injection and cat.

co was higher than average but well within limits, first fail was .41, after the 02 change it was a little better. I put on an bosch universal 1wire because I couldnt find the JDM 02 at a reasonable price.

This was ASM or IM240/ one is G/km other is % and PPM

I assume ASM since you said 207 ppm HC?

Well on a number of JDM's I wired up 4 wire o2 sensors to help with aircare related failures.

when you say limits you mean the max failure number ? or do they have a good reading number for that vehicle ?

yeah I realized I should give more info. yes it is PPM and %. HC PPM max, 111. my readings 207, average reading 12. CO% max .87, mine .41 (on first test, second one being better after the O2 change but that sheet is burried in my car) average .02. I am only doing an idle test because I have studs on the car. I recently found it has a cracked rubber hose from the hot pipe to the intercooler, so I got to replace that. I have a cat installed, but in the last couple of months the car has had the destinctive smell. so I doubt its doing its job anymore. im thinking of doing dual cats as an air care exhaust then put the muffler back on with a delete pipe after air care.

this week I have to insure it for 3 months, because my insurance is up on the 28th.
