Decided to attempt a radiator flush today...

Postby rayj » Tue Apr 05, 2011 8:12 pm

Everything was going well until air was trapped in the cooling system. Radiator filler neck and reservoir was full so i started the car. Large amount of bubbles were coming up for 5 mins non stop so i decided to squeeze the tube (i did not know there were 2 tubes) to help it out. After i rev'd the car to 2k rpms for 3 mins and at that point, it wouldnt "burp" anymore. I thought it was good so i took it for a test drive and when i was 10 blocks away from my house, the heat suddenly turn cold and my temperature gauge went up to 75%. I quickly pulled over and turned her off and thought i fucked it. At this point i didnt know what to do but to call for help. I decided to call oteck and ask if he can come down to van and help me finish the burping process. Without any hesitation, he came down and finished the job for me. I would like to say thanks for coming down. Anyways i dont think i'll be touching any coolant system for awhile... :(

Wow, that is very generous of him. I still have to attempt to do mine. At least you gave it a shot yourself and hopefully you have learned why it happened?

yea i learned why. when i was doing the burping process, i was squeezing one of the two hoses (that connects to the 2 radiator pipes below the car?) and didnt realize that there was another one. so i still had a tiny bit of air trapped inside the system. Also i was planning to do a full flush until both bolts under the car for the radiator drain plug pipes broke off. =[

i tried doing it the lazy way without bleeding the two valves in the front.

you know there are bleeder valves up front and in the engine bay correct? no squeezing should be required

Speaking of Joe's helping hand, I found myself with a loose suspension bolt recently that partially bent my tie-rod. I was stuck at a nearby shop with no hopes of getting that part. Then Joe got wind of it and within 30 minutes he was on his way with a tie-rod to help me out. Saved me lots of money and time.

Thanks Joe! You've outdone yourself.

I can see that this is an older thread.... but...

for anyone who does a bit of MR2 work (or car work in general) and has a 1/2 way capable air compressor I highly suggest picking up a vacuum-lift for coolant....

I have this:
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp ... ir=catalog

I bought mine used on Ebay 5 years ago for around $100. It's been used on probably 30+ cars, many of which are MR2's. To fill an MR2 it takes about 10 minutes and no bubbles are in the system and there's no burping process.
