Martin's newest Deuce.

Postby bbarnumboy » Sat May 11, 2013 8:19 am

I would like to welcome my newest edition to my MR2 collection. A red 1986 sunroof model with full power options, AC, cruise control, full alarm system, nice newer deck and leather interior. The car has one tiny dimple on the passenger door, a little paint scratch on one of the headlight covers and a little piece of paint missing from the rear bumper aside from that it is very straight.

The only bad about the car is the 269,000 Miles it has and that it was a respray at some point. Paint looks very nice if you don't look too close at the trims and a few spots of over spray etc. Obviously a cheap paint job, maybe from an insurance claim or something etc . .. The car had been sitting since 2009 because of what they called a big oil leak. I looked and it drips a few drips and I believe it is coming from the oil hose between the oil cooler and the oil pan, so that is a very easy fix.

Purchase price was $500. I put in $12 in some wiring and connectors to get the electrical working again and found out it needed a new starter. We compression started the car and off I went to buy a $68 refurb starter. An hour later I had the new starter in and it works great.

Pulls strong and everything seems to work aside from the speakers not being hooked up to the deck, cruise control powers on but won't do anything I make it do for some reason. Any help in the right direction of the cruise control not working would be appreciated. The Ac also needs a refresh if it even works.

Sweet little ride, Martin. What's the plan for this one?

I completely detailed the interior and cleaned up all of the black pieces including the leather interior and exterior. The car is looking very good now and today I worked on the stereo and got all the speakers working including the subwoofer underneath the driver seat. Next I will need to fix the oil leak . Unfortunately the car seems to burn a bit of oil, it likes to smoke a bit until it is warmed up. I don't know if any of you can tell me if that means it is valve stem seals or if its the Rings. Once it is warmed up it doesn't seem to smoke at any rpm maybe just a tad bit in the high RPMs over 5000. Aside from the little issues I freaking love this car and it will be going to a shop on Friday to get a recharge on R12. Yes I found R12 :-)

If the motor ends up burning too much oil that I cannot take it on a 100 mile trip without giving it more oil, I will put a blacktop 20v in it.

If it's consistently puffing on start up then it's usually valve seals.

AC is all charged up with fresh R12 and a brand new account compressor. She is blowing 38 degrees F at the vents! Chilly like I like it!
