Bad Glass?!

Postby thelaw604 » Tue Jul 10, 2012 10:14 pm

So I washed my car Sunday night and had it parked in the usual spot of my secured parkade. Went to get groceries today and noticed this:

Nothing taken, alarm still armed, no evidence of rock or anything thrown... Looks like it broke on its own. Joys of owning old cars eh? I've had this happen to me before with my old 1994 Celica.

I would garner a guess that it's due to weak, old windows, constant impact from opening/closing since there isn't a frame. Anyone else have this happen to them?

The worst is cleaning it up, tiny shards everywhere!

Anyways, looking for a replacement piece of glass now and someone to help install it. Send me a message if you have a recommendation.

I'm pretty certain I replaced the windows on that car so they would only be a few years old.

I'm guessing someone tried to break into it and they just used their elbow to break it... hence no evidence of tools or rocks being used.

I guess that's possible but nothing was taken, door was still locked and alarm still armed... strange.

Also some much nicer cars in my parkade including R8s, 911 Turbos, etc... along with some older cars that are much easier to steal...

^ Yeah, exactly, that's still a thrill to many juveniles.

BTW, I wouldn't say those cars are 'much nicer', especially the Mazda (yuck).

Ha! You're right, an R8 is a wicked beast, misread that!

Where are you going to source your side window from?

The thieves broke your glass and are leaning in to scrounge anything valuable to take. They purposely don't unlock or open your door so that it won't set your alarm off. I'm sure they do a soft "tap" to test if your car is equipped with a vibration sensor first. My sister's underground parkade had about half a dozen cars hit the same way recently. They know this from surveillance video and from the footprint left on the adjacent car, indicating they were bracing their entire body with their foot. You should check with your strata to see if they have security video of your underground. I would also bring it up with them to see where thieves might be entering your complex (ie. faulty gate, cloned gate opener/clicker code, wedged/ajar entrance doors, damaged locks, etc.) and if they can beef up security.

Shitty luck... I've never heard of glass just blowing up on its own. If nothing was taken then i'll say vandalism or maybe he didnt have time to grab anything (people/car coming?)

Only ever heard of glass shattering when you pour ice cold water on a hot windshield. Even then, it should only spiderweb, not completely break like that. Sounds like vandalism. Pricks.

A lot of things could have happened. Now if we're playing a guessing game, I'm going to guess that a huge truck smashed his door into it. :silly:

Nice rims btw.

True, it could be anything at this point.

Just spoke to the strata manager and he's going to review the tapes and see if there's anything suspicious.

Either it's crappy luck or someone is out to get me... Happened to my Celica about 3 years back too! Same thing... nothing was taken, but it was in East Van...

The side window on my car did spontaneously explode and shattered into a million pieces in the past, so it is possible under the right conditions. It happened while still at the body shop shortly after the glass was replaced. My car was kept indoors at the body shop the entire time waiting for a repaint. Not sure what would've caused it as the temperature was fairly constant indoors.

A few winters back I had my BMW Vandalized for fun. They took a bat to the rear window, drivers window and quarter window. Just a thrill to some people I guess, Just like you I had nothing taken.

I had to replace my side window about 10 years ago after a break in. I bought an OEM window from Toyota for about $190 at the time so it wasn't too bad.

Have you looked around for a BB gun pellet? It's small enough that you could've missed it or it bounced off the window after breaking it.
